Comforting the Loss

Ralph Todd. Comforting the Loss. Painted in 1892, this superlative watercolour by Ralph Todd must surely count among his finest works. Signed, a very good size at 30 inches by 20 inches. This work is very similar in scale and subject matter to Walter Langley's "But Men Must Work and Women Must Weep" of 1883 (City of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Breton Girl

Henry Scott Tuke. An early portrait of a Breton girl, oil on mahogany panel, 11.75 inches x 13.75 inches, set in oval mount and period frame. Condition is excellent as it is behind glass. Tuke made a living early in his career by painting portraits and this example probably dates to between 1881 and 1883 during which time he was studying and painting in France. The pallet, broad brush strokes and attitude of the sitter are all typical of Tuke's early portraiture. Signed.

Richard Harry Carter, one of the earliest recorded pre Newlyn and St Ives colony plein air artists active in Cornwall. Bryan Ingham. A rare drawing of the Halsetown Methodist Church, near St Ives. Halsetown is two miles south-west of St Ives, built for miners in the early 19th century by James Halse, Member of Parliament for St Ives. He built the village in 1832, to house his mine workers. At that time the village was part of St. Ives parish. Float mounted in a new tulipwood St Ives frame - a stunning addition to any modern art collection.

FRED YATES. The Silver Harvester in Penzance. For a Fred Yates this one has got it all!  There is maritime and Cornish interest, beautiful, strong colours together with the trademark impasto technique. The colourful houses going up Quay Street are "crowned" by the distinctive church tower. The busy figures in the foreground complete the scene.
