From Newlyn to Lamorna
From Newlyn to Lamorna is an exhibition of paintings by artists associated with the early Newlyn School and pre-WW1 Lamorna Group. The exhibition is a collaboration between two galleries and will be "fluid" as paintings will be changed during the show. One of the highlights is a series of Lamorna paintings by Eric Ward, one of Cornwall's leading contemporary artists.

Eric Ward was born in 1945 in St. Ives, Cornwall,
where he has lived for most of his life. After leaving school, he worked
as a fisherman until 1985 when he became St. Ives Harbour Master.
In 1964 he joined the RNLI as a St. Ives Lifeboatman, was promoted to
Coxswain in 1989 and retired after 34 years of service in 2000. Always
interested in art, Eric started painting in 1987 at the St. Ives School
of Painting.
Since then his work has been shown widely, and he has expanded into
etching. In 1996 BBC2 featured Erics life, Oils and Oilskins
on Video Diaries. A year in the making, the programme was acclaimed by
The Times.
In January 2003 Halsgrove published a large-format 144-page book
including over 100 painting in full colour and entitled Eric Wards
St. Ives: From His Studio and Beyond.
Eric became a member of the Chelsea Arts club in 1993 and since then he
and his wife Karen have frequently visited the club and recall many
happy visits. |
 |
In 2003 he took early retirement from the
harbourmasters position to concentrate fully on his painting, having
retired from the lifeboat three years earlier.
A new book of paintings and drawings with a forward by Alison Bevan,
Director of the Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance, Cornwall
will be available in May 2013.
We will be offering a complimentary
signed edition of Eric's new book (May 2013) with all purchases. |
